White aluminum oxide is made from high purity Bayer process alumina. Raw materials and furnacing practices must be strictly controlled in order to ensure the highest possible purity and optimum crystal structure. It is then crushed in a way to produce a blocky grain distribution with increased bulk density.
It has the appearance of white crystal powder, with a uniform particle size and stable chemical properties. Its difficulty in dissolving in acid and alkali as well as its enhanced sintering activity make it an attractive material.
Aluminum oxide can be used as a raw material in the production of a variety of other substances, such as long afterglow phosphors, three-color phosphor, abrasive materials, transparent ceramic lamps and high-pressure sodium lamps. It can also be used as a catalyst carrier, EP-ROM window, crystal, ruby and sapphire crystal, and electronic ceramics.
